The Emergency Medicine and First Aid Techniques Department held a special discussion session on testing bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics, featuring:
Lecturer. Salam Abbas Aliwi
The session included a comprehensive introduction about what bacteria are, along with an overview of antibiotics, which are used to treat bacterial infections by killing bacteria or inhibiting their growth.
It emphasized the complex relationship between these two entities and how improper or excessive use of antibiotics leads to the development of antibiotic resistance, a global phenomenon that poses a serious threat to public health.
The discussion then transitioned to the practical aspect, which is sensitivity testing. The practical steps reviewed included:
– Culturing bacteria
-Placing small discs saturated with different concentrations of antibiotics on the culture plate
-Identifying the inhibition zone
-Measuring and evaluating to determine whether the bacteria are sensitive or resistant to the tested antibiotic
The discussion concluded that antibiotic sensitivity testing is a cornerstone in prescribing safe bacterial treatment, stressing the necessity of regularly conducting this test to ensure the effectiveness of treatments and to contribute to combating the growing phenomenon of resistance.
